What this decision was about

Charges and fees, Service failure

In the Ombudsman’s words

Mrs B and Mr C complain that Barclays Bank Plc did not fully explain the cost of making a payment to a US dollar account in the US. They want the charges including the exchange rate loss to be refunded.Charges and fees
I accept that if the full scale of the likely cost had been explained in more detail, Mrs B may not have made the payment in this way. I conclude that it is not reasonable to require the bank to refund the cost of exchange rate loss. But I conclude that the bank should pay some compensation for the weakness in its service.Service failure

This page summarises the Ombudsman’s published final decision. The document itself is the record: DRN6596285.pdf on financial-ombudsman.org.uk.

The outcome shown is the Ombudsman’s own published classification, not our reading of the text. Nothing here is legal advice, and a decision concerns only the complaint it was made about.
