What this decision was about

Bereavement and power of attorney, Service failure

In the Ombudsman’s words

Mr B, on behalf of the estate of his late mother, complains that Bank of Scotland plc, trading as Halifax, didn’t tell him that his late mother’s joint fixed term account had been rolled over into a new fixed term despite him having power of attorney for his mother.Bereavement and power of attorney
I was satisfied the bank didn’t seek authority from both parties as it said it would. I also noted the bank now accepts it should have sought that authority but didn’t.Service failure

This page summarises the Ombudsman’s published final decision. The document itself is the record: DRN9922875.pdf on financial-ombudsman.org.uk.

The outcome shown is the Ombudsman’s own published classification, not our reading of the text. Nothing here is legal advice, and a decision concerns only the complaint it was made about.
