What this decision was about

APP scam refund refused

In the Ombudsman’s words

RBS’ automatic systems flagged the cheque because the transaction was unusual for Mr and Mrs M’s account... I am satisfied that RBS tried to contact Mr and Mrs M at this stage, and having failed to speak to them, decided to return the cheque unpaid. It did so on the basis of the terms and conditions - these allowed it to return cheques if it reasonably suspected fraud.APP scam refund refused

This page summarises the Ombudsman’s published final decision. The document itself is the record: DRN2171512.pdf on financial-ombudsman.org.uk.

The outcome shown is the Ombudsman’s own published classification, not our reading of the text. Nothing here is legal advice, and a decision concerns only the complaint it was made about.
