What this decision was about
In the Ombudsman’s words
I’m satisfied HSBC assessed Mr and Mrs A’s additional borrowing application fairly and found it was unaffordable based on its legitimate lending criteria. It wouldn’t be responsible for a lender to agree to additional borrowing where it doesn’t think it’d be affordable, so I don’t consider HSBC acted unfairly by declining Mr and Mrs A’s application.Irresponsible lending

This page summarises the Ombudsman’s published final decision. The document itself is the record: DRN-4784752.pdf on financial-ombudsman.org.uk.
The outcome shown is the Ombudsman’s own published classification, not our reading of the text. Nothing here is legal advice, and a decision concerns only the complaint it was made about.
