What this decision was about

Bereavement and power of attorney, Service failure

In the Ombudsman’s words

The estate of Mr J (the estate) complains that Barclays Bank UK PLC released money from Mr J’s account that they shouldn’t have done.Bereavement and power of attorney
I’m satisfied the letters of administration was needed. It was this which proved who was entitled to the remaining funds after the priority bills had been paid. Without this, the account would still likely be in dispute, so Barclays followed their disputes procedure here. In considering what would be a fair outcome for this complaint, I’ve considered that Barclays didn’t follow their procedure for stopping standing orders.Service failure

This page summarises the Ombudsman’s published final decision. The document itself is the record: DRN-4321265.pdf on financial-ombudsman.org.uk.

The outcome shown is the Ombudsman’s own published classification, not our reading of the text. Nothing here is legal advice, and a decision concerns only the complaint it was made about.
